Have you started the yearly spring or summer cleaning yet? When the temperatures start to rise, I tend to get a little crazy and start mad cleaning the house because I plan BBQ’s and pool parties multiple times during the summer and need to have a clean house. My husband is usually the cleaner in the house and LOVES his super antibacterial, killer of all germs cleaning products but with my nieces running around and touching things, I would prefer the non-toxic options. Not only is it healthier for toddlers, it’s also healthier for us adults. The toxin load in our lives are pretty high so if cleaning supplies can be made with simple ingredients and still keep us clean, what’s not to love?
A few months back, I shared an all-purpose cleaner that can be used for counter tops, sinks, etc as well as an easy fruit and vegetable cleaner to get all the dirt and grim off your produce. Today, I’m sharing a recipe for Disinfectant Toy Cleaner for all those toys that end up in your toddler’s mouths and then the floor. While I sometimes look the other way and claim the five second rule, it’s good to wash your kid’s toys monthly to keep them safe from harmful bacteria and germs. Image may be NSFW.

Non-toxic disinfectant Toy Cleaner
-5 drops of lemon or tea tree essential oil
-1/2 cup organic distilled white vinegar
-1/2 cup filtered or distilled water
-lavender essential oil (optional)
-small spray bottle or large pot
Feel free to use a combination of essential oils as the ones I listed above are known for their antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties. I like to add lavender oil to make everything smell nice, but that is totally optional.
You can easily make this cleaner into a spray so you can spot clean your child’s toys or if you’d rather, you can add all the ingredients to a large bowl or pot and let the toys soak for a minute or two and then scrub them clean. I opted for the spray bottle today. Fill the spray bottle with the water, white vinegar and your choice of essential oils. Put the lid back on the spray bottle and shake. Spray your child’s toys generously with the spray and scrub clean. Rise with water and let dry.
Are you reluctant to give up those harsh chemical cleaners? My husband is definitely taking some convincing but if I prove these work just as well, he’s usually sold :-).
